Bareboat Charter Turkey: Skipper-Yourself Guide (2026)

Self-skipper a yacht in Turkey — what bareboat charter is, what qualifications you need, where you can sail, what it costs, and how to book on MaviSail.

If you hold an ICC, an RYA Day Skipper ticket, an IYT Bareboat or an equivalent certificate, you can charter a yacht in Turkey without a captain — drive it yourself, choose your own bays, anchor where you like. It's the same product the German, British and Dutch sailing clubs have been buying out of Croatia for thirty years. MaviSail now sells it out of Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Göcek.

This guide covers what you need to know before you book.

What "bareboat" means in practice

Bareboat is the opposite of a crewed gulet charter. There is no captain included. No hostess, no chef, no engineer. You and your group are the crew. The operator hands you the keys at the marina, walks you through the boat's specific quirks for 30 to 45 minutes, watches you berth once, and you cast off.

You bring it back at the end of the charter fuelled up, cleaned (or pay the cleaning fee — most operators include it in the price), and the operator checks the boat against the inventory you signed at handover.

The boats are typically modern monohull sailboats (Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria) or cruising catamarans (Lagoon, Bali, Excess). Not the traditional wooden gulets — those need a captain who knows the rig.

Qualifications MaviSail accepts

Turkish maritime authorities recognise the ICC at minimum. MaviSail accepts the following on its bareboat-eligible fleet:

  • ICC — International Certificate of Competence (issued by national authorities under UNECE Resolution 40)
  • RYA Day Skipper (Practical), Coastal Skipper, or Yachtmaster Coastal
  • IYT Bareboat Skipper
  • ASA 104 — Bareboat Cruising
  • US Sailing Bareboat Cruising

Other tickets (Germany's SBF-See, Holland's Klein Vaarbewijs II, etc.) go through a separate review — submit and we'll evaluate within 48 hours.

A VHF radio licence is mandatory if the boat is 36 ft or longer.

What the operator expects of you

Three commitments:

  1. A minimum of 2 adults aboard at all times. Skipper plus one competent crew. Insurance never covers solo charters, and Turkish harbour officials don't let single-handers depart.
  2. Bring the original certificate to the handover. A scan is fine for the MaviSail approval step, but the captain will check the original at the marina against your passport before releasing the boat.
  3. Stay within the agreed cruising area. v1 of MaviSail bareboat is the Turkish coast between Bodrum and Antalya only. Crossings into Greek waters are not allowed — they need transit logs and crew lists filed with the Greek harbour master in advance, and the v1 product doesn't handle that. Greek-island bareboat will arrive in a later phase.

Money: deposit, security, cleaning

Bareboat in Turkey runs in three line items, and the sequence matters because the security deposit shows up on your card as a hold, not a charge.

  1. At checkout: 30% boat-fee deposit + cleaning fee. Captured on your card the moment you finish the Stripe Checkout flow. This is the only money that actually leaves your account at booking time.
  2. The day before charter: security deposit hold. Typically €2,000 for a small monohull, €3,500 for a 40-foot, €5,000–€7,500 for a catamaran. This is a pre-authorisation — it shows up as pending on your card statement but is not captured. The hold drops off your card within 48 hours of return inspection if no damage is claimed.
  3. Remaining 70% of the boat fee: due 4–6 weeks before charter. Standard charter industry timing. We email a reminder.

These are 2026 market rates for the MaviSail fleet and roughly 30–50% lower than the same boat chartered with a captain, because there's no captain wage in the price.

Where you can sail (v1 cruising area)

Bodrum to Antalya, roughly 500 km of coast, broken into the same five sub-regions our routes guide covers:

  • Bodrum & Gökova — sheltered gulf, easy first bareboat week
  • Datça & Hisarönü — best snorkelling, quieter anchorages
  • Göcek & Twelve Islands — calmest water, easiest navigation
  • Fethiye & Western Lycia — bigger water, more exposed
  • Kaş & Kekova — historic, quietest stretch

The afternoon meltem westerly wind (typically 12–20 knots in high season) means an experienced Day-Skipper handles the entire charter coast easily. We don't recommend a bareboat charter east of Antalya in v1 — the wind patterns get steadier and the bays are fewer.

What's included in the boat

  • Hull + sails + rigging + engine, in inspected (Liman Başkanlığı certified) condition
  • VHF, AIS, GPS chartplotter, anchor + ground tackle, depth + speed instruments
  • Cooking fuel + first-aid kit + flares + EPIRB + life jackets (adult + child sizes confirmed at handover)
  • Tender + outboard
  • Bedding + bath towels for the booked guests
  • Bimini + cockpit cushions

What you bring

  • Original certificate + VHF licence + passport
  • Galley provisions (we recommend stocking up in the marina town the morning of departure — most marinas have a supermarket within walking distance)
  • Personal clothing + beach towel
  • Sunscreen (much more than you think)

How to book

Three steps:

  1. Submit your qualification at /account/qualifications. The review team replies within 48 hours.
  2. Browse bareboat-eligible vessels at /vessels?bareboat=true. Filter by region, boat type, capacity.
  3. Click "View" on the bareboat CTA on any vessel detail page, pick your dates + crew + qualification, accept the rental agreement, pay the deposit. Stripe Checkout handles the payment; the boat is yours for the booked window.

The handover happens at the marina on the morning of your start date. Walk-throughs take 30–45 minutes. Bring everyone who'll be skippering or handling lines — both the rental agreement and the insurance want the operator's brief to be in front of the actual people sailing the boat.

Insurance and liability

The boat carries its own hull insurance with a bareboat rider. The security deposit covers the policy excess — if you scratch the boat against a pontoon, you pay up to the security deposit and the insurer covers the rest.

For personal liability (your own injury, medical evacuation, trip cancellation) buy personal travel insurance with charter coverage. MaviSail does not provide it.

For disputes about damage at return — if the captain says you broke something and you say it was already broken — an independent marine surveyor is appointed from a MaviSail panel. The surveyor's written report is binding on both sides. Whoever is found at fault pays the surveyor's fee (typically €250–€350). This is the standard Croatian-market dispute clause and it deters frivolous claims on both sides.

What v1 doesn't do yet

For honesty:

  • No Greek-island clearance. You can sail Turkish waters all week, but you can't dip into Symi or Kos. v2 of bareboat will handle the transit-log paperwork.
  • No engine-only motor-yacht bareboat. Motor-yacht bareboat needs a different ticket (Yachtmaster Power or equivalent) which isn't on our accepted-cert list yet. v2 again.
  • No flotilla. MaviSail currently lists individual bareboat charters only. Lead-skipper flotilla weeks are on the roadmap.
